Gene Sharp: The US scholar who inspires Middle East uprisings

Many of the protesters in Cairo's Tahrir Square say they found inspiration in the writings of 83-year-old US political theorist Gene Sharp.

His works on non-violent revolution including From Dictatorship to Democracy, and in particular on Gandhi's resistance against the British, have been cited by many bloggers and activists.

In an interview on BBC Radio 4's Broadcasting House he said "dictators are never as strong as they tell you they are".
