The United Nations said on Wednesday that there are three factors that would contribute much in accelerating efforts towards the Millennium Developing Countries (MDGs).
Sha Zukang, U.N. under secretary for Economic and Social Affairs, told audiences here at the second day of the Special Ministerial Meeting for Millennium Development Goals Review in Asia and the Pacific "Run Up to 2015" that the three factors are building more infrastructures, creating more jobs and investing in fossil and renewable energies. "If carefully managed, the three factors would contribute much towards MDGs achievement," he said, adding that the three factors will support a sustainable growth. "However, they must be supported by international cooperation, technology transfer and the completion of Doha round," he said.
According to Sha, progress achieved by Asia Pacific region is not even. "Southeast Asia is the most progressed in the Asia Pacific while South Asia still faces challenges, and progress in land-locked developing countries is slow, except for gender equality, primary education and effort to address HIV/AIDS," he said.
Sha said that significant challenges remain as Asia Pacific is home for the largest poor population, meaning that hunger and poverty are still big threats. "Asia Pacific is the world's most dynamic region but in the same time, it faces serious challenges," he said.
