UNITED NATIONS — Veteran Russian diplomat Yury Fedotov has been named the United Nation’s top drug and crime fighter and will also head the UN office in Vienna.
Fedotov will replace Antonio Maria Costa of Italy as executive director of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon announced Friday.
Fedotov, who is currently Russia’s ambassador to Britain, previously served as the country’s deputy UN ambassador in New York.
UN spokesman Farhan Haq said Fedotov, who joined Russia’s diplomatic service in 1971, would bring “a wealth of senior-level experience” to his new job. Costa led the office since 2002.
