Do not expect any agreements on how to lower climate change at Copenhagen. That is the message coming from the United Nations, as it now admit is has lowered their expectations for the outcome of the summit in December. With all the money spent on organising the meeting, Secretary General Ban Ki Moon had hoped to seal the deal. But an international agreement seems to be a long way off.
Janos Pasztor, Director of the UN Secretary-General’s Climate Change Support Team said: “There are reports of a new poll in the United States that indicates that interest and support for action on climate change may actually be declining. The Secretary-General sees US engagement as vital for a climate change deal. Climate change is not going to be resolved in Copenhagen in the next few weeks. We always knew that. It’s a long term problem that will be with us for many years, if not decades, to come.”
In the UN a new Democratic Senate Committee to tackle global warming has been set up. It is expected to be met with Republican resistance. And the EU cannot agree on financial help for developing countries who want to cut carbon emissions.
